Could You Have Hypothyroidism and Not Even Know It?

Many times in life and with our health, the exact cause of a health condition is not apparently clear. Over time, subtle signs and symptoms may come and go. They can be misdiagnosed and treated incorrectly, or symptoms may be dismissed if not severe. The latter is often the case with hypothyroidism, commonly referred to as underactive thyroid disease. Hypothyroidism is when the thyroid gland does not make enough thyroid hormone. Approximately 20 million Americans have some type of thyroid disorder, but nearly 60 percent are unaware they have the condition. Women, especially those over the age of 60, are more prone to hypothyroidism. Menopause and the shift in hormones is often a factor in the development of hypothyroidism, but reasons can vary. Left untreated, hypothyroidism can worsen and also lead to an increased risk of more serious conditions such as cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, and even infertility. Read more…
