A Dietician’s Guide to Foods That Can Help You Lose Weight Fast

Published January 13, 2021

Everyone begins a weight loss journey feeling a little lost, and that’s totally normal. With countless diet plans and passing fads all promising quick effortless weight loss, it can be difficult to figure out what works and what doesn’t. That’s where our Registered Dietitians (RDs) come in! ShapePro’s highly-trained dieticians have developed this simple guide to help you understand which foods to eat to lose weight fast.

What foods can aid in weight loss?

Anti-inflammatory foods, such as lean proteins, non-starchy vegetables and healthy, plant-based fats, can all promote a healthy metabolism while quenching inflammation. ShapePro RDs encourage eating these healthy foods on any weight loss plan:

Does portion control matter if I’m eating healthy?

While eating healthy foods is important, the amount you consume still matters. When it comes to weight loss, it can be essential to focus on portion control. Controlling portion sizes creates a caloric deficit, which leads to weight loss.

Portion Control Guide:

½ Plate: Non-starchy vegetables

¼ Plate: High-quality, lean proteins

⅛ Plate: Healthy fats

⅛ Plate: Complex carbohydrates

What foods should I avoid to try and lose weight?

The following foods can contribute to increased inflammation, hormonal imbalances, digestive problems and weight gain.

Do I have to avoid these unhealthy foods forever?

It is unrealistic to say you will never eat these foods again. You will certainly want to indulge  in some cake on your birthday or your favorite dish during the holidays — and we encourage that! You are more likely to stick to your weight loss plan if you adopt these recommendations as sustainable lifestyle habits instead of thinking of them as strict rules. Generally, you’re expected to follow these recommendations 80-90% of the time, while occasionally enjoying more indulgent foods during the remaining 10-20%.

Does drinking water enhance weight loss?

Staying hydrated and drinking plenty of water is especially important for weight loss. Water can help curb hunger and cravings. If you find yourself feeling hungry outside of regular mealtimes, it can often be linked to dehydration. Try drinking a glass of water and waiting a few minutes. If you are still hungry, eating a light snack is okay.

Generally, it is recommended to drink at least half your body weight in ounces of water daily. For example, a 200 lb person would consume 100 oz of water daily.
